ENGAGING LOCAL
COMMUNITIES FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
Across Europe, rural areas are experiencing depopulation, economic decline, and cultural erosion. The trend toward urbanization has left many rural communities struggling with limited opportunities, dwindling services, and a growing sense of isolation.

However, ruralities across Europe also hold immense regenerative potential. Far from being homogeneous or static, these territories are diverse, culturally rich, and deeply rooted in place-based ways of living. Their strong community ties and embedded social relations offer fertile ground for innovative forms of collective action, care-based economies, and ecological stewardship. Recognizing the singularities of each rural context is key to designing policies and initiatives that are not only effective, but also just and transformative.

At the same time, remote work and digital nomadism are rising, opening new possibilities for rural revitalization. RARE leverages these opportunities to support local communities in attracting digital workers, entrepreneurs, and creatives who can contribute to social and economic renewal.

By empowering residents with new skills, resources, and networks, RARE creates the conditions for sustainable growth, cultural preservation, and community-driven innovation. The project is being implemented in four rural communities across Germany, Spain, Croatia, and Italy, bringing together local and international expertise to help shape the future of rural Europe.
